Special Needs Children learn their colors: Preschool Blue

A blue Cake with blue icing

Blue Cake with Blue icing

We can use cooking to teach a young child his or her colors. The basic idea behind this is very simple: ” Cook and eat a lot of the same colored foods”.

Today’s color is blue. Add blue food coloring to foods to make them blue: plain milk, ordinary sugar, cream cheese ,etc,. For sugar, put a scoop of sugar in a plastic ziplock bag and add some coloring to it. Then let the child squish the bag to mix in the color. The word ‘blue’ will come up many times in conversation today, thus reinforcing the color to the child.

In the following example, we will bake a blue colored cake and spread blue icing over it. To make the blue cake, we will add blue food color to a white cake mix batter.

Please visit http://www.indiatree.com for natural food colorings made from edible plants.

NOTE: After baking, the lightly browned crust may look green. But the blue icing will cover the crust.  Since the inside of the cake is pure blue, after frosting, we will have an all blue cake.

Here is a visual guide to preparing the blue icing and icing a blue cake.

INGREDIENTS & SUPPLIES:

A baked two-layer cake.  (Bake a two layer cake according to the directions on the package and adding enough blue food coloring to the batter for a nice color.)

TIP FOR ADULTS: Have your own separate utensils (in this case, a spreading knife). This way, you can help spread the icing without taking the child’s utensil away.  Sharing is hard!
